Life as we understand it is predominantly based on energy. Unknowingly and unthinkingly, we consume energy at every step of our lives. It starts with our morning cup of coffee, our hot shower and ends with our watching the news before we go to sleep. Energy or electricity as we call it runs pretty much every aspect of human life. Our dependency on energy is so complete that we never ever wonder how and where this energy comes from.
Electricity that is supplied today is mostly generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, and propane) and constructing dams, not to mention the rise of energy generated from nuclear fuels. This electricity is transported over long distances resulting in huge transmission & distribution losses and maintenance costs. The burning of fossil fuels and the emissions from power generating units pollutes the atmosphere which is the main contributor to global warming and the related climate change impacts across the globe.
The current energy solution is just not sustainable. Fossil fuel sources are quickly becoming scarce and it is imperative that we find methods to maximize our electricity supply and minimize our involuntary, though wasteful lifestyles.
RENEWABLE ENERGY - IT IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR
Renewable energy is generated from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, and geothermal which is naturally replenished. This is also referred to as green energy, since no fossil fuels are burned while generating electricity through these processes.
While the best reason to switch to renewable or green energy could be an environmental conscience, it also satisfies the need for an uninterrupted power supply. And well configured systems make long term economic sense. Energy saving reduces costs to households and to businesses, increasing sustainability of the local economy and community.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY – THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN
Energy efficiency, simply means using less energy to provide the same level of energy service.
In most domestic or commercial units there is a considerable amount of electricity lost, mostly due to a lack of planning in lighting arrangement & requirement or due to inefficient fixtures that are used. So instead of staring at the electricity bill with disbelief, you can change the way it looks.
A renewable energy power system combined with energy efficiency measures, be it energy saving lights or efficient lighting systems can ensure optimum use of electricity, minimise wastage and simultaneously reduce maintenance costs and electricity bills. |
